Feel the tranquility of Kolocep Island
Have you ever been on an island so small, peaceful and harmonious that it made you want to stay?
Tiny but mesmerizing
Have you ever been on an island so small, peaceful and harmonious that it made you want to stay? Koločep, or Kalamota as the locals call it, is surely such an island. With no cars, less than 2.5sq km and a population of barely 300 people, you will absolutely fall in love with the tranquility if offers. Located only 3 km west of Dubrovnik, Kolocep Island is the southernmost Croatian populated island and together with Lopud and Šipan a part of the 13 Elaphiti islands. It takes only 15 minutes with a speed boat to get there.
There are only two villages on the island – Gornje čelo and Donje čelo. Both of them boast a nice sandy beach ideal for families with children, snorkeling and sunbathing. As you immerse in the clean, refreshing sea you will feel reborn, like you are floating on a cloud. The sea in the shallows is so transparent it almost mesmerizes you. Gazing in it provides a feeling of utter peace and laziness.
A great place for relaxation and adventure
There are many things you can do on Kolocep Island, even for a short visit. There are valuable cultural monuments you can explore, mostly smaller churches and chapels built in the period up to the 16th century. There is a forest path connecting the two villages on opposite sides of the island. Should you decide to take a walk, you will feel like you have stepped into another world, a world of natural wonders. You will hear birds’ and crickets’ song, smell the Mediterranean herbs, and actually feel the serenity of this place. From the viewpoint you will be able to see how the waves hit the steep cliffs on the southwestern side of the island. It is quite the view!
